Hot Air Releases: operating since 1989, skint since 2003.

releases overview: hot-air.bandcamp.com

Yes we are bowed in defeat. That World which we grew up in, that adrenalin and endorphin enducing rush that came of either Sticking together something with swing or somehow Stumbling upon someone else that went to the zone or 'made the grade', that world is gone... withered away in a fabulously prescient pre-enactment of this earths gradual descent into mutant adaption to an exponential rise in atmospheric toxins. So the music/sound/audio-ritual atmosphere has become so congested, thinned out creatively, onset with overload induced amnesia and totally bereft of the life giving nourishment molecules formerly known as 'revenue'. No one is being greedy here, the playing field has already been cleared, in fact the whole city has now been rased, the picture is clear... It's the truly independent makers in the music scene that have lost Altitude, as the oxygen was sucked out of the Corpse of rock'n'rolls lunch money.. No more limousines to the platinum standard brothels for us. Or, if you want the workaday prosaic reality, no more funds to Funnel back into that simple half confident joy of publishing your own finely honed reports from the bunker or giving some other under-a-rock dwelling genius a vote of confidence and leg up. The wherewithal to publish like a man, to put your money where your mouth is, to Inspire CONFIDENCE by the act of being CONFIDENT, confident enough to make the full statement, package the thing like you mean it, wrap it all up with the protection and signage you think it might need for the long expressway to those overseas skulls, the cheese and bread in a spotted handkerchief on a stick a caring parent will always send their offspring Out into the world with. That is to say:
" NOT put it up on UBOOB with no info, explanation, track titles or seperation, proper credits or listenable audio quality, without permissions or considering who actually put the work in to publish and get these things out into the world and never a glimmer of thanks or appreciation for all that came your way because of that work... yes. I am talking to you Old Hat. Not valuing yourself is NOT a legitimate reason to devalue someone elses efforts "
Anyway, enough of the picking at fleas amongst our mangey fur... a brief and necessarily truncated history might be in order?
-In the dwindling twilight of the 80's in a no-go area of the greater manchesters known as Hulme an itinerant un-musician known as Matt Wand found a guitarist/balloonist registered medically under the name Rex Casswell nesting in a similar squatlike abode to himself. Both were committed to moving the tiny manchester improvising scene into the suspiciously regarded 'electronic' mode, and not without a struggle I might add. It became obvious that a new group without the shackles of 'purism' might be prudent. Matt coined the name Stock, Hausen & Walkman because it A] simultaneously conjured the preposterous 'hi-brow' audio culture of Herr S, the total commercial pop and portable convenience of Sony's cassette revolution and wrapped it all up in a roussellian word slip homage to then ultimate kings of 'lo-brow' trash Stock, Aitken & Waterman. and B] would likely get them sued ( a necessary route to music success in those times ), plausibly by Sony for breach of copyright and possibly by Herr S who it turns out is a much bigger fantasist than any of us suspected, in a german radio interview claiming he knew us personally, was in correspondence and regularly gave us his advice! I digress.
After success with a ridiculously packaged cassette ( matroska style hidden within a kellogs variety pack minature cereal box inserted into recycled hospital Biohazard blood sample bags... wait! wasn't this the AIDS era? ) gradually, eventually, Mr Wands stubborn and frankly ill-advised squeezing of all the various perversities of the expanding and then contracting SH&W musicians into each Hot Air Release led to the financially rewarding Organ Transplants Vol 1, whilst his co-writer on that monstrosity spent his royalties on pursuing a 'Jarryesque' lifestyle in Paris, Mr Wand chose to invest his share and the majority of his time in releasing other worthy, forward thinking but unfortunately non-profitable acts on his Hot Air label. Whilst the label has been dormant in it's activities in the 'physical world' since around 2003, the advent of Bandcamp, which seems to be the only large scale download outlet that doesn't have the arrogance to rake off the percentages that MIGHT have been almost justified when distributing physical goods in earlier decades, has meant it is now plausible to make all that previous effort, unreleased archival items and some newer stabs in the dark available to the new generation of bitstreamers and digi-eared downloaderers, in the main because if this old house burns down it will at least all exist in some form and can be 'discovered' and then 'forgotten' once again. It was becoming clear around 2002 that publishing niche market physical products was fast becoming a form of financial suicide.
